TIFF: El Chivo on Richard Linklater's ME & ORSON WELLES

Richard Linklater has previously earned the right for me to be excited about seeing his films regardless of what they're actually about. Turns out this is from a fiction novel by Robert Kaplow, which was based on a famous photo of Orson Welles and a young man performing together during Welles' 1937 production of Julius Caesar. "That guy playing Orson Welles was genius!" That seemed be the comment coming from nearly everyone's mouth after the screening. It's true. Christian McKay as Welles is the perfect, magnetic magic of an actor playing a role they were born to play. It's no surprise to learn McKay's resume includes various BBC radio projects. Claire Danes was looking mighty nice in person and does an excellent job onscreen as an unashamed, flawed love interest for Zac Efron's character (the "ME" of the title). A small contingent of the Zac Efron fan club was present at this, the World Premiere. Thankfully, they were mostly civil and kept the shrieks to a minimum. Efron isn't great and isn't terrible. He's adequate when his character is actively engaged, but spends a fare amount of time starring somewhat blankly and whatever else is going on as Welles tries to ready the Mercury Theater for opening night. The tone is light throughout, but so too is the overall impression of the film. McKay's portrayal of Welles is one for the film history books, while the rest is charming, but a bit slight. Also, what was going on with the color red being used everywhere, all the time? My TIFF People's Choice Ballot: 3 out of 4.

The stakes are higher as the franchise moves to the big screen, but the cast members still act like kids.
SALT LAKE CITY -- YOU MIGHT expect the set of "High School Musical 3: Senior Year": senior year to be a bit like summer camp, with a bunch of young actors running around in shorts and T-shirts. And to a certain extent, it is. During a recent visit to a night-shoot set in a junkyard here, the preternaturally familiar cast members are surrounded by the colorful rusted-out carcasses of cinematically groomed classic cars and are killing time between shots doing what any group of high school or college kids might do between classes.
Zac Efron, 20, who plays alpha dog and basketball star Troy in the series, nuzzled the neck of his on-stage and off-stage girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens, 20, who plays the lovely brainiac Gabriella. She then bumped shoulders and banged fake swords with Corbin Bleu, 19, who plays Troy's best friend, Chad. At one point between takes, Efron and Bleu threw themselves into the canvas chairs recently vacated by director Kenny Ortega and cinematographer Daniel Aranyo and requested a playback, watching the scene they just shot the way any other guys might review their Grand Theft Auto IV scores.
"Did you think about asking the director if it was OK to sit in his chair?" Ortega said, looming suddenly over the two for all the world like a high school principal. Efron grinned sheepishly and leapt from his chair, but everyone, including Ortega, laughed. ... Read More ...

Zac Efron and co-star Claire Danes arrive at the Me and Orson Welles Premiere held at the Ryerson Theatre during the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada on Friday.
Actor Christian McKay and director/producer Richard Linklater also posed for photographers on the red carpet.
Me and Orson Welles involves a teenager hired to star in an Orson Welles production of Julius Caesar when he becomes attracted to a career-driven production assistant. The film is slated for release in 2009.

Zac Efron keeps it casual with his beanie look as he arrives at LAX Airport in Los Angeles en route to Canada on Thursday.
Zac will be in Toronto for the Toronto International Film Festival, where his movie Me and Orson Welles will be premiering.
The 20-year-old Disney star is also getting ready for the opening of High School Musical 3 on Oct. 24.

As Troy in Disney's wildly popular High School Musical series, Zac Efron has never had a problem playing the popular guy - maybe that's because in his case, art has taken inspiration from life. With the third chapter of High School Musical hitting theatres October 24th, the heartthrob carves out an acting career beyond his Disney days, and continues to prove that he's still the coolest kid in town.
Though Zac has a line-up of projects in the works, this month he'll reunite with his on-and-off-screen girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens for the third (and final) installment of the High School Musical trilogy: High School Musical Three: Senior Year. Though he may not be revealing much when it comes to plotlines, Zac is dishing about Troy and the changes Senior Year brings to him and his relationship with Gabriella. "The stakes are higher," Zac explains, "because there are real decisions to be made. What college are you going to? What happens to the girl? It's fun," he smiles, "watching Troy grow into a man."
For legions of Zac's admirers, Troy's journey to adulthood is made all the more interesting since Zac himself is navigating a similar transition. Next year, he'll star in a pair of films that promise to position him in a slightly different light. The first, 17 Again, has Zac sharing a role with former Friends star Matthew Perry. "It was hard to play someone that I couldn't relate to in the slightest," Zac admits. "But the director taught me a lot about the art of acting, which I hadn't been schooled in before. I've got a better understanding of what it means to be an actor now."

Zac Efron - Teen Vogue Cover Photoshoot

Teen Vogue magazine tapped photographer Bruce Weber to shoot Zac Efron for their October 2008 cover.
"To be the cover of the Young Hollywood issue is a big honor," Zac gushed. "I'm glad that someone is honoring the new up and coming stars. I think there's a lot of new talent coming up and I'm proud to represent."
When asked how it was shooting the cover, the 20-year-old High School Musical star said, "Today's shoot was very natural. We're not in a studio, we're outside. I'm very lucky to work with Bruce. He's such an icon in the world of photography."
As for what he likes to dress in, Zac said, "My personal style is just comfortable. I wear jeans a lot¨CI love just being just in sandals and a T-shirt."

High School Musical 3's Official MySpace is holding a contest - "HSM3 School Spirit Contest"
In support of the theatrical release of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, the "HSM3 School Spirit Contest" hosted on MySpace.com ("Contest Website") is a Contest in which participants complete various tasks in order to earn points for eligible high schools (private or public) located within the contiguous United States and the District of Columbia that start at grade nine or higher. Schools that include grades below grade nine are not eligible to participate.
One eligible school, in accordance with these Official Rules, may be eligible to win the Grand Prize of a HSM3-themed pep rally with a performance from a musical artist (the "Pep Rally") and a senior class Disney Grad Nite experience for up to 300 students and 30 chaperones, including travel to either WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort or DISNEYLAND Resort.

Hairspray has become only the third recent musical to cross the $100 million mark at the domestic box office after Chicago and Dreamgirls, according to Variety.
